Feeding the Carolinas, Together.

Across the Carolinas, there are 2.6 million people living in poverty.

2.6 million people.

Early in the morning, a convoy of ten tractor trailers filled with produce, meat, dairy and staple goods left Hendrick Motorsports in Charlotte, headed to the 10 regional food banks of North and South Carolina, including Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina.

This compassionate show of support comes as 10 regional food banks of North Carolina and South Carolina have united to form FEEDING THE CAROLINAS– a new association with a vision of “feeding more people better food” across all 146 counties in North and South Carolina. The alliance will work together to raise food, funds, advocate and educate while at the same time exploring economics of scale in purchasing products and services. Second Harvest serves the 18 beautiful counties of Northwest North Carolina, from Boone to Burlington and everywhere in between.

Collectively, the food banks of North and South Carolina distributed over 238 million pounds of food and household items this year. Additionally, together we supported over 3,700 on-the-ground partner agencies in all 146 counties of both states, including soup kitchens, emergency pantries, homeless shelters, youth programs and senior programs. Second Harvest has 470 partner programs that are doing the on-the-ground work of getting the food we source out to the local communities that need it the most.

This event was a great reminder of the tremendous support that we and our sister food banks receive year-round. Present at the event and helping to fill the trucks were partners from Adams Outdoor, Moore and Van Allen, Assurant, Perdue, BI-LO, Pet, Duke Energy,Publix, Family Dollar, Food Lion Feeds, Simpson’s Eggs, Smithfield, GMRA, Target, Harris Teeter, Tyson, Hendrick Automotive, Walmart, Johnson and Wales University, and the Joseph P. Riley Center for Livable Communities at the College of Charleston.
